Common Causes of Toenail Fungus
Before I get into the causes of toenail fungus I want to provide a couple facts. Did you know that the majority of nail fungus sufferers get it in their toenails and not their fingernails?
This is because toenail fungus thrives in warm and damp conditions like your shoes, which isn’t common for hands. Also, most people aren’t as self-conscious about their toes so they have a tendency to ignore the initial symptoms of toenail fungus.
Common Causes of Toenail Fungus May Include:
- A broken toenail, which helps the fungus to enter
- A separated toenail
- Tight-fitting shoes
- Cutting toenails to close to the skin
- Damp feet for extended periods of time
- Live in a warm and humid place
- Work in a warm and humid place
- Increased age typically over 60
- Suffering from Diabetes
- A suppressed or weakened immune system
- Poor general health
- Using communal showers
- A hangnail
- An ingrown toenail
- Shoes that make your feet moist or sweaty
- Wearing the same shoes every day without letting them air out
As you can see from the list above, toenail fungus really likes warm and moist places. What you may not know is that toe nail fungus can be spread from person to person. Places like public showers, swimming pools, locker rooms and gyms are an ideal breeding ground for a toenail fungal infection. You can also get it by sharing personal items like toenail clippers, towels, etc… Men commonly get toenail fungus if their athlete’s foot goes untreated because the fungus ends up spreading to their toenails and they start exhibiting toenail fungus symptoms.
Causes of Toenail Fungus For Athletes
Athletes and people wearing tight-fitting shoes that cause trauma to the toes have a higher risk of getting toenail fungus. The fungus can even spread to other parts of the body. There are other risk factors that can increase your chances of getting toenail fungus such as abnormal PH level of the skin and not drying off your feet thoroughly after bathing or exercising.
What causes a fungal nail infection?
Yeasts, molds, and different kinds of fungi can also cause fungal nail infections. Most are caused by the same type of fungus that causes athlete’s foot. These microscopic organisms known as dermatophytic onychomycosis don’t need sunlight to survive. They simply need the warm and moist skin around and under your toenail.
Of all the dermatophyte’s involved in onychomycosis the most common is Trichophyton rubrum. A few of the other dermatophytes are called Trichophyton interdigitale, Trichophyton violaceum, Microsporum gypseum, Trichophyton soudanense, etc…
